The group discussed the content of the upcoming workshop that will be conducted by Cassie Erkins. Kate and Amy will have a conference call with Cassie on May 15th and recommend the following topics be included in the training:
Strategies for teachers. How can you use formative assessment data to drive instruction?
How much is too much and how much is not enough?
How do we determine if it is valid? (6 Quality Indicators)
Do you grade formative assessments?
What does formative assessment look like?
How do these assessments connect to the Marzano and Danielson evaluations models?
Is there a book to go along with this training?
Can Cassie help SDA develop modules for a formative assessment training via DL? (this could possibly be done in April)
Is okay to record the presentation so participants have the option to rewatch parts of it at at other times?
Kate and Amy will use the information that is gathered from Cassie to create a 2 day agenda and promotional flyer. This flyer will be emailed to all group members for approval by July. Registration will be opened to other PDO affiliates. If space is available, ESUs will be allowed to invite school personnel. Maximum attendance is 78.
Sheree, Julie and Sara will create a survey that will be given to participants at the conclusion of the workshop in order to determine follow-up needs.
The group determined the specifics of the Nov. 2015 Cassie Erkins workshop. Kate and Amy will contact Cassie and request the following:
We would like you to provide a basic understanding of what is good formative assessment.
How do you develop that with teachers (regardless of how many teachers are on their “team”.)
How can we use assessments to continually review prior concepts and introduce new concepts? (so you know where you have been, where you are at, and where you are going.) so you can make better educational decisions.
Please also provide common sense guidance—how long should an assessment be? What kinds of questions? Etc
A discussion was also held regarding the feedback for necessary follow-up from the November RCD workshop.
Kristi will create a Google Community as a place to gather materials that members have currently used.
Kate will contact Jill Johnson and ask her to share her materials.
The Curriculum/Assessment Bucket Groups will review these materials at the next meeting and determine next steps.

The Assessment Bucket and the Curriculum Bucket Groups met together. The following people were present:

A discussion regarding what we felt was needed after the RCD training was held. The group determined that they would like a training on formative assessment in 2015. A discussion regarding potential facilitators for this training was held. The following comments were recorded:
Emily J. has attended the Leadership and Learn seminar several years ago. This training has characteristics of strong assessment and is tied into the process that we will be learning during the RCD training in November 2014. It helps teachers analyze the quality of assessment items and matches rigor of items to standards. We would need to make sure that we are able to utilize the materials that we get from this training with our districts. Some companies aren’t as willing to do this unless extensive training with their products occur.

The group decided to contact Leadership and Learn and Cassie Erkens from Solution Tree and gather the following information: availability, cost, tailoring workshop to meet the needs of SDA. Sheree P., Marilou J., and Barb F. will gather the information. This information will then be shared via email with all Bucket Group members and discussed at the November Strategist meeting.

This group decided that the next need for training in this area should be geared toward the newly developed Social Studies and Career Readiness standards. Harris Payne and Greg Christensen would be the most likely individuals to conduct this training. The group would also like to have a sharing session to discuss various options for the alignment process. We would potentially like to hear what Lincoln, Omaha, Lexington and several ESUs are currently doing. The group would also like to explore how lesson scales could fit in with the social studies alignment process.

The group held a lengthy discussion about the upcoming Common Core Training on November 27th and 28th. Donlynn Rice from NDE will provide the training on November 27th. The training will specifically focus on the following topics: Understanding the structure, Text complexity and implications, What a Common Core assessment looks like, and How the Common Core fits with College/Career Ready and 21st Century Skills. Mitzi Hoback from ESU 4 will facilitate the training on November 28th. She will discuss how Marzano Scales and Learning Goals fit into the Common Core Standards and how it ties to grading.
Looking down the road, the group anticipates a need for staff development with the newly revised Social Studies and Language Arts Standards. Depending upon the November elections, there may also be a nee for more training on the Common Core.

Questions: Next steps? Is the introduction piece enough/too much for the November meeting? Do we dig into alignment during the one-day training with DonLynn on the Common Core? Some felt that building an understanding of the format and structure of the Common Core standards 1st was most important, others felt you could do considerable pre-reading of the materials/document first. Lenny VerMaas commented that we will eventually need to look closely at the alignment piece especially in Math. There are a lot of approaches that are different than the way Nebraska teachers are accustomed to teaching math.
Questions: Should we bring in an outsider to do the alignment? Any ideas who?
